It was a one-way decision that was made by myself to create a Discord server for our users. While Discord is mainly targeted for gamers, its seamless modern interface and ability to join servers with the click of a button made the decision final for me.
I have been a Discord user for several months now for the games that I play, and I always had it in the back of my mind to create this for our website as I believe it would greatly enhance communication. In all reality, connecting to the Jabber server is just too complicated, clicking a button, signing up and poofing where you need to be is much simpler.
Why I chose Discord
Simply put – it was very easy. A simple click of a button and setting up a few things got it going. It also has the options to pin important messages, make announcements, send notifications to users etc.
Are we getting rid of anything else?
As of right now there are no plans to get rid of our other communication networks such as Zello, or GroupMe for our Team members. Discord is simply an addition but if it starts getting busier and easier I will certainly make considerations.
How can I join the server?
If you navigate to any page on the website, on the left side you will see Discord Server, followed by a Join Server, simply click the button, register, and you’re there.
Do I need to install any additional software?
Technically no. Discord does have a web-based application, however, if you plan on using it on a regular basis it is recommended to have the desktop and smartphone apps.
What do I do once I’m on the server?
You will end up on the #landing text channel where you will see an introduction to the server as well as some ground rules. Discussions should take place in their appropriate channels, such as #weather or #general.
I want to invite someone else to the server!
Very simple! Right-click the share icon next to the #landing channel right the Instant Invite. Additionally, you can right-click the channel and click Instant Invite.
Why should I join the server?
It’s an all-in-one place for you to communicate in 2 fashions without the need to install any additional software unless you explicitly want to.
How about a whole list?
- IT IS COMPLETELY 100% FREE
- You will be able to monitor all social media accounts from one place
- RSS feeds from the National Weather Service and Storm Prediction Center will be displayed in a channel
- As far as I know, there’s no other “weather server” on the Discord community
See you on the server!
FYI- GreeDee is my gaming name for Discord, alstormtracker is my actual name on the server. Just putting that out there. 🙂
