The National Weather Service has issued Heat Advisories for the entire area for Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will be in the upper 90’s and heat index values (what it feels like) will be around or above 105 degrees. Heat this bad becomes dangerous to young kids and elders.
Here are some tips to avoiding the heat, and protecting yourself against it:
- Drink plenty of water – on days like this, simply going outside will cause you to sweat, make sure your body is ready to do so by staying hydrated.
- Limit outdoor activity – if there are activities you must do outdoors, take frequent breaks. Follow the “20 and 20”, on for 20 minutes then inside for 20 minutes. Make sure in those 20 minutes you are in an area of air conditioning or shade, and be sure to drink up on water!
- Avoid alcohol – alcohol will not hydrate you and may cause dehydration only quicker, especially with temperatures this extreme
- DO NOT EVER, EVER LEAVE A PET OR CHILD UNATTENDED IN A VEHICLE, EVEN WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN. Remember: “beat the heat, check the backseat!”
