Black Ice Formation Likely On Roads

As we continue to provide updates as we receive them, we want to advise all motorists to limit their travel to emergencies only for areas that received snowfall today. Temperatures will fall to well below freezing creating very dangerous and hazardous travel conditions.

Many county officials are deeming roads impassable. As the night goes in, conditions will only get worse. For your own safety it is advised to stay off the roads unless it is an emergency.

…Risk of black ice overnight in Marshall… De Kalb… and Cullman
Counties…

Lingering moisture from today’s snowfall in combination with cold
air moving into the region, will create a risk of black ice
development on some area roads. Bridges and overpasses, especially on
rural roads are especially at risk. Temperatures will fall into the
upper 20s after 6 pm, and into the middle 20s for overnight lows.

Black ice can be especially dangerous because you may not be able to
see it until you have already encountered it. If traveling, use
extreme caution, especially on bridges, overpasses, and elevated
highways where water freezes first. Do not assume that a well
traveled road will be free of ice.
